There are two types of wood turning tools based on how they shape the wood. They are cutting tools and scraping tools. Cutting tools involve spindle gouges, roughing gouges, bowl gouges, and skew chisels. Scraping tools include parting tools, scrapers, and carbide cutters. There are also various tools for specific uses that don’t have the same intended use of shaping the wood and don’t fall into these categories quite so easily. This includes spiral texturing tools, chatter tools, and point tools.
