Mortise and Tenon is a type of joinery that has been a part of woodworking for thousands of years. It is considered one of the basic joinery types due to its strength and simplicity. There are many variations to this age old joint and many ways to construct one.
As the name implies, the joint consists of two parts. The mortise is basically a rectangular hole cut out of the stock to accept a tenon which fits precisely into the mortice.
A mortice can be cut out with a chisel, a router, a drillpress, a mortisising machine, or more. In a similar fashion, a tenon can be cut using a handsaw, chisels, routers, tablesaws, and more. Below are videos demonstrating very different ways to make mortise and tenons using a variety of tools and techniques.
